6 Weeks

Take up the sword!
Learn the art of the longsword and begin your journey into Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).

This 6-week introductory course is designed for all new NSHF students and offers a dynamic introduction to the fundamentals of the Medieval and Renaissance German longsword tradition, with a strong emphasis on physical culture and movement. Students will build a solid foundation for ongoing HEMA training, including general use of the sword, guards, attacks, defensive actions, footwork, body mechanics, physical conditioning and fundamental fencing theory. This course is physically demanding and designed to forge strong fundamentals from day one, so come prepared for a tough and rewarding workout!

For centuries, the sword has stood as a powerful and enduring cultural symbol. Whether you've always been drawn to the sword, love history or seek a unique athletic challenge, HEMA offers a direct connection to the martial traditions of the past — developing discipline, courage and skill. HEMA is an exciting and growing movement - it is the revival of lost martial arts, left to us in treatises by fencing masters centuries ago - part combat sport, part historical exploration, and a deeply rewarding pursuit that strengthens the body, sharpens the mind, and cultivates a warrior spirit. By studying historical fight manuals and bringing them to life through modern training, sparring, and competition, we are reviving long-lost martial traditions—and we hope you’ll join us and discover a new passion.
